Confronting Homophobia in the American Fraternity
Which of you who are actually members of American collegiate fraternities were out to your Brothers in college? What issues did gay members face in your organization? As the president of my chapter's Board of Governors and Alumni Council on top of being our graduate delegate to the national senate, I've found that my local members have no problem but the national organization causes me to remain socially closeted in most circumstances. I hear derogatory remarks and gay slurs often at national events, especially from chapters from the south and from larger schools. How should one admonish his Brother for gay bashing while avoiding a backlash?

Well I belonged to a Fraternity at the University of Toronto in Canada and was also on the Board of Governors, plus back in my native Denmark at the University I belonged to a fraternity. Now I am alumni of both and I find that both were and are of me being gay. But i think things have changed AND for the most part these fraternities if not others find themselves with a FEW OF OUR PEOPLE. And we tend to be in an upper eschelon, means of wealth and prestige and have been treated with kid gloves. But given 30 or so years back I do not think so, when our nationalities were not even accepted by many W.A.S.P. fraternities. I am proud to say that I made a difference for us gays while and now as alumni in University, both in Canada and Denmark. I think we tend to be too modest with our efforts and place in the mainstream of day to day life. But beware of the dog that bites twice, I always say. Kudos to us that venture on and make path roads for those who follow us. Georg (Yorgos).
